How We Got Started

Medicine With a Mission started because of a vision that needed to be made into a reality. Joshua Carlson had always dreamed of becoming a surgeon and spending his life helping the underserved. He wanted to use his skills to meet the needs of people who required medical care, but neither had access nor opportunity, while giving all the glory to God. While doing medical work in rural Honduras, he saw the massive disparity in regards to health care availability. In addition, he knew that even if people were given access to basic medical care, there would still be that population of people who needs surgical care, but they would not be able to afford it or there may not be surgeons available to perform the procedures. With the right people and resources, quick, life-changing surgeries could be provided to heal and change people’s lives. Surgeries for congenital birth defects, such as cleft lip/palate, can take as little as 45 minutes and change a child’s life forever.

Little did Josh know that another person shared his exact same vision. This is when he met Tommy Martin during their first year of medical school. Tommy had the same realization when he did medical mission work in Africa; it was his calling to spend his life healing and helping others. He also had the dream of being a surgeon and providing surgeries to those who could never afford them. It was soon after Josh and Tommy spoke that they realized they shared the same passion to spend their lives healing and serving the needs of the international community.

August 8, 2014 Josh was asked by Gene Deems, then a neighbor, what his passion was. Josh  expressed being a doctor and helping the underserved... and if he could have anything in the world it would be a nonprofit called "Medicine With a Mission." Gene that evening searched the internet and found 150,000 references to the term "medicine with a mission" and yet no one owned the domain names. Gene purchased them for Josh, not knowing at the time that he would become a partner in this endeavor.  Margo Cook became a founding member the summer of 2016.

And in October 2016, Medicine With a Mission became a Maryland nonprofit corporation and received IRS 501(c)3 approval.

This is where the passion was born; out of a united vision to help others and give all the credit to God.

Our mission is to provide hope and healing to those in need

How do we do that?
We build partnerships to help develop innovative solutions for creating sustainable healthcare for under-served populations in the United States and throughout the world.

A world where health disparities are reduced and even the most underrepresented individuals have access to sustainable health care services, support, proper resources, and life-changing surgeries, all through the love and compassion embodied by 1 John 3:17-18.
